About
Joseph

Painter, artist and graphic designer working between canvas and wall — based in Kerala, exhibiting and shipping worldwide.

Portrait of Joseph Francis

I have always been more interested in what a colour remembers than what it depicts.

My work moves between two scales — the intimacy of a canvas you can hold in your eye, and the architecture of a wall you have to walk past. In both, I'm chasing the same thing: the feeling of light held still, the temperature of a place, the residue a moment leaves behind once its details have faded.

Trained first as a graphic designer, I came to painting through an obsession with surface and edge. That discipline still shapes the work — every painting is also a problem of composition, weight and silence. I work slowly, in oil, acrylic, mineral and wax, often returning to a piece over months.

Alongside the studio practice I take a small number of commissions each year, and document works in progress openly, because I believe the making is as much the work as the result.

A painting is finished when there is nothing left to remove — only something left to feel.
